In a nut shell:
Plasma TV:
The first generation flat screen TV. It doesn’t need backlighting since the phosphors that create the image can light up themselves. With no need of backlighting, it has CRT-like viewing angle, meaning – unlike LCD – you don’t have to be on a certain spot to get the best view. With comparable picture as LED TV’s, it comes in slightly cheaper price (depend on the brand).
The downside is it comes in thicker form and consumes much more power than LED TV’s. Additionally, due to hard competition with LCD and LED TV’s, good plasma TV is only produced at 40 inch and above.

LCD TV:
On LCD TV’s, the screen itself does not illuminate, thus it requires CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lights) backlighting. The benefits of LCDs are their wide range of size, the slim body, less power usage, and the price which is the lowest among other flat screen TVs.
The biggest con of LCD TV is the viewing angle. You’ll notice difference on brightness and color as you view the TV from different angle. This could be annoying if you’re watching TV with other people and you can’t sit on the “sweet spot”.
LG LCD offers good quality LCD within reasonable price range
LED:
LED is a developed version of LCD, but instead of using CCFL, it uses emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate the display. This technology allows better response to scene changes, better contrast and brightness, wider color range, more accurate image rendering, and a lot less power consumption. Some people argue that LED has better pictures compared to plasma on the same size and resolution. It also slimmer than LCDs (which already slimmer than plasma), allowing it to be installed anywhere easily.
The drawback is (similar to its predecessor) still narrower viewing angle. While it is a lot better than LCD, it still cannot match plasma TV in terms of free viewing angle. Due to its position as the “latest technology” in flat screen TVs, LED used to be more expensive than other types. However, as time passed, the price becomes more competitive, especially for higher size models.
Samsung LED is one of the best value LEDs around
Basically, I’d just go with LED for TV below 42 inch (the narrow viewing angle for LCD is a big factor to consider, especially if you buy it for your living room). For size above 42 inch, I’d still go with LED for its slim body (easy to install) and low power consumption, but if those 2 things don’t bother you and you want better viewing angle instead, I suggest you go with Plasma.
Is that all you need to know before running to find out your flat screen TV reviews? Well, not exactly, there are 2 things you need to know first: display resolution and refresh rate. These little numbers can change the price drastically and you’ll want to know what they’re for.
Display Resolution
Display resolution is the number of pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. The format is width x height. Example: 1920×1080, 1360×768, 1280×720, etc. Obviously, you’ll get better and smoother picture quality with higher resolution. For flat screen TVs, there are 2 common resolutions:
1. 1080p: refer to 1920×1080 pixels. This is often referred as “Full HD”. You’ll need this if you’re going to watch HD movies (such as movies released on Blu-ray Disc) or playing game consoles that support 1080p display such as Xbox or Playstation3. Note that not all games run in 1080p, so check your want-to-play list first.
2. 720p: refer to 1280×720 pixels. This is often referred as “HD Ready”.
Note that in order to receive the maximum display resolution, you’ll have to connect your player/game consoles to your TV using a HDMI cable. A decent HDMI cable costs about $10.
Refresh Rate
To put it simply, refresh rate is the number a display hardware draws the data in a second. Higher refresh rate will bring you smoother image motion which will show its difference when you watch scenes that involve fast motion. The common refresh rate for today’s TVs is 60 Hz and 120 Hz. Again, this depends on what you’ll watch on the TV. Sports, action movies, and games will require higher refresh rate while movies without fast moving scene will do fine in 60 Hz.

TCL L32HDF11TA is considered to be the best LCD in its price range. Comes in 720p 60 Hz with 2 years warranty, it allows you to plug and play various media formats, including music, videos, and images.
